What is Probate?

Probate is the court-supervised process of winding up the affairs of a deceased person.  Think of probate as officially changing ownership of assets determining:

• • Who are the heirs/beneficiaries?
  • What are the probate assets?
  • What are the valid debts?

The court makes sure all valid debts are paid and net assets are distributed properly before closing estate.
